The Maples FAQ´s
The Maples´ Philosophy is to encourage academic excellence, social and moral development and good work / study habits, through effort and perseverance.
The Maples academic program follows the Ministry of Education Curriculum from Senior Kindergarten through Grade 8. Our curriculum enhances the ministry requirements with additional programs for instrumental music, computer education, French and Values/Morals Education. There is an emphasis on proficiency in the basics of reading, written language and math.
The Maples was founded in 1989 by Brian and Philomena Logel, who are both certified Ontario teachers. The Logels each had twenty years of experience teaching in the publicly funded system prior to establishing The Maples.
The school is located on the 2nd Line of Amaranth, off of Highway #109, just minutes west of Orangeville. The school is easily accessed from Caledon, Erin, Hillsburgh, Shelburne, Grand Valley and Mono Township.
The Maples has been in Amaranth Township since September 1998. Previously the school was located in the Township of East Garafraxa and in Orangeville.
The school building and premises meet all building, fire, health and safety codes. Monthly and annual inspections are conducted. The water system complies with the Ministry of Environment Regulation 170/03.
The elementary program (J.K. to Gr. 8) is recognized by the Ontario Ministry of Education (School #884731). The Maples Seedlings Pre-school Program is licensed under the Day Nursery Act, with the Ministry of Children and Youth Services and is inspected annually.
The Maples PTA (Parent Teacher Association) organizes one major fundraising event (The Maples Fall Festival) each October. No other fundraising is conducted. The school raises funds for other organizations such as the Terry Fox Foundation. Individual classes, as part of their Values ‘Service Project’, may raise funds for organizations such as UNIECF or may collect items for the local food bank and other charities.
The Maples combines traditional teaching methodology with modern practices.
The Maples Seedlings Program is for children from two and one-half to four years of age.
The Maples provides an academic-based Junior Kindergarten program with scheduled time for structured play for children who are four year of age by December 31st.
Senior Kindergarten students must be five years of age by December 31st.
The expected academic achievement is that the students achieve their personal best and are prepared for entrance to high school. The academic program challenges the students to exceed the provincial Level 4 standard. Students are encouraged to demonstrate all the required knowledge and skills prescribed by the Ministry Curriculum for their specific grade level. They are encouraged to develop self-discipline and a systematic approach to tasks.
The Maples reports student progress to parents three times a year (November, March and June) using the standard provincial report card. Formal parental interviews are conducted after the First Term Reports, usually during the first week of December. Teachers are available for interviews upon request after the other term reports and at any time during the school year. As well, regular communication between home and school is encouraged through the use of daily worksheets or student planners.
Student knowledge, progress and skill development is monitored with quizzes, check-ups, tests and examinations. All students’ skill levels in reading, spelling and arithmetic are assessed when applying for enrollment and are re-evaluated each May to measure growth. These standardized tests may be administered at any other time during the school year if there is concern about a student’s rate of progress. The Canadian Test of Basic Skills is administered to all Grade 3 to 8 students at the end of each school year.
All of the Grade One through Grade Eight teaching staff have teaching certificates. The Kindergarten teachers have either teaching or Early Childhood Education (ECE) qualifications. The Maples Seedling teachers have ECE certificates and are registered with the College of Early Childhood Educators.
Yes, students are required to wear white shirts/blouses and navy blue pants or Gordon Tartan tunics/kilts. Sweaters, shorts, vests, skorts etc…are available. Uniforms are purchased through RJ McCarthy, online or in the Brampton store.
